Iowa Land Title Association Course Three: Legal Descriptions
Tracing Ownership through Time

The Legal Descriptions Course is a graduate level course.  Participants will be given advanced instruction on legal descriptions and will be drawing sketches of legal descriptions during the course and exam.  All ILTA courses are designed for persons with at least 3 years of experience in a related field.

Course Topics:

  • Governmental Surveys: History; Baselines; Principal Meridians; Township Lines; Range Lines; Correction Lines; Sections; Aliquot Parts; Land Measurements; Corners, Markers and Monuments.  Types & Parts of Legal Descriptions: Aliquot Parts; Metes and Bounds; Quantitative; Geographic; Platted.
  • Plotting Legal Descriptions: Measuring Distances, Angles and Bearing Lines; Drawing Metes and Bounds Descriptions, Curves in Legal Descriptions.
  • Legal Descriptions: Water Boundaries, Encroachments, Condominiums.

The exam is required only for persons pursuing the ILTA Certified Land Title Professional designation and requires a 90% exam score to pass.  Membership in the ILTA is required to obtain and maintain the ILTA CLTP designation. More information is available on the ILTA website: ILTA CLTP Program  

This course is approved for 7 hours of continuing education credits by the Iowa Real Estate Commission, and 6 hours CLE by the Iowa Supreme Court Commission on Continuing Legal Education.

PLEASE NOTE:  THE CLASSROOM MAY BE COLD.  PLEASE BRING A JACKET OR SWEATER ON THE DAY OF THE CLASS!

Course participants are responsible for bringing the following supplies to class:

Pronto Compass
Engineer Scale (ruler)
Calculator with square root capabilities
Layout Triangle (not required but suggested)

REGISTRATION & FEE PAYMENT DEADLINE:  August  20, 2021 to ensure that course materials, including parking passes, are mailed to you timely in preparation for the course.  Course materials will not be mailed until payment in full has been received by the ILTA office. Physical Distancing/Classroom:  The seating in the classroom will be arranged to allow for social distancing.  Hand sanitizer will be available.
